This fascinating film, narrated by Morley Safer, is the true story of the ship that launched a nation”. Exodus 1947 was the most famous of the Aliyah Bet ships that tried to run the British blockade of what was then known as Palestine. Recently declassified documents, eyewitness accounts and archival newsreel footage reveal how Jewish American crews and financiers played an important role in trying to assist the Haganah in bringing Holocaust survivors to Palestine. In the summer of 1947, the President Warfield, an aging Chesapeake Bay steamer, left Sate, France with 4500 Holocaust survivors aboard, in the hope of being able to run the British blockade. After a bloody battle with the British, the survivors were ultimately sent back to a Displaced Persons camp in Germany. This highly publicized international incident heavily influenced the United Nations to vote in favor of the partition of Palestine in November of 1947. 56 MIN. COLOR AND B&W.
